1. Educational purpose

The information on this website is provided for general education about anaesthesia and perioperative care. It is not a substitute for a personal assessment, examination, and plan made by a qualified anaesthetist or physician.

2. No guaranteed outcomes

Anaesthesia is very safe in modern practice, but it is not risk-free. No technique, and no plan, can be guaranteed to suit every patient or to be free of complications. Individual fitness is a clinical judgement made by the anaesthetist, and a postponement for further assessment or for safety reasons is possible at any point up to the start of an anaesthetic. Some after-effects, including nausea, sore throat and drowsiness, are expected and usually settle. Any account of typical courses on this site is general and may not apply to your situation.

3. No dosages or drug names

This site describes classes of medicine rather than named products, and it gives no doses. Anaesthetic drugs are selected and measured for the individual patient by the anaesthetist. Nothing here should be used to self-administer, adjust or stop any medication.

4. Seek professional advice

If you have a medical concern about an anaesthetic you have been offered, or you develop warning signs before or after an operation — difficulty breathing, chest pain, a swollen painful calf, confusion, fever, or a wound that will not stop bleeding — seek urgent medical attention immediately. For general questions, arrange a pre-anaesthetic assessment with a qualified clinician.
